We all are worried about these days about identy theft or someone gaining unauthorized access to our computers. However, most people still leave their wireless routers open for everyone to gain access to. Not only is doing so most likely breaking your contract with your internet service provider, it leaves you at a huge security risk. Heres how to secure a typical linksys WRT54g.
Open up your web browser, such as Internet Explorer. In the search bar type 192.168.1.1 and press enter.
It should bring up a box to input your user name and password. The default user name is blank (don't put anything in) and the password is admin. Enter these details and log in.
If you see this page you are doing good so far. This page is the first of configuration pages.
Now we need to add a password to your wireless so when ever someone tries to connect to your internet they need to enter a password to access it. To do this, select the wireless tab at the top, and then select the wireless security tab. It should look like this:
You can choose either WEP or WPA in the security mode. WPA is stronger and better protection but it is not compatible with all older wireless devices. So we will use WEP. In the WEP Encryption select 128 bits 26 hex digits. In the Passphrase box enter a strong password and press generate. It will generate 4, 26 digit keys. You should copy and paste these keys and your passphrase into a text document for future reference because these are the keys you will need to gain access to your wireless router. When your computer asks to enter the WEP key you can enter the Key 1's 26 digit password into the box. It will automatically save it so you don't have to enter it every time. Once that is all done, we will log back into the router as before and this time we need to change the default "admin" password to something else. To do this select the Administration tab at the top and you will have a box to enter your router password. Put a new strong password in there and save it. This is the password you will use to configure your router next time instead of the "admin" password.
Hope this helps secure your linksys wireless router! Discuss this article in our forums!
