Today, someone pulled me aside to look at their Windows XP computer. It was blue screening on boot up with an “unmountable boot volume” error, and i was asked to fix it. Naturally I could, and here is what i did:
  • I put in the Windows XP disk and booted to it.
  • At the “Welcome to Setup” page, I pressed “R” to get it into recovery mode.
  • At the dos prompt, i ran check disk by typing “chkdsk C: /r” without the quotes and hit enter. (This will take a little bit)
  • Then type “fixboot” and hit enter. Press “Y” at the prompt, hit enter, and then type “exit” and hit enter.

Thats it, your computer should run great again.
