I recently purchased a neat new device from EVGA. It is a USB to DVI adapter. I needed a third monitor on my desktop and did not want to go the route of a pci graphics card since my desktop only has one pci-e slot. Additionally, I figured I could use the device on my laptop or other computers easily. To be honest though, I didnt have high expectations for this device but it really surprised me!

The product description can be found at EVGA's website here .

I ran the device on a 17" LCD running the max standard resolution it supports (1280x1024 at 32bit color) on Windows Vista x64.

The installation was a breeze. I simply plugged in the device and Vista automatically recognized it, asked to connect to the internet and download the driver software, and that was that. Very easy!

My LCD has only VGA on it so I used the included DVI to VGA adaptor that came with it.

Here are some pictures of the device:

The device seems rock sold. It has an metal shell of some sort and has rubber on the base so it doesn't slip around on your desk. There is an orange light that glows when there is activity through the device. The usb cable is a racheting type meaning that when you want to wind it up it snakes into a small little box in the center which was a very nice touch on their part.

The software works very well also. Here is a screenshot of it in action. You can see you have many options to choose between with it.

Lastly, and most importantly is the performance of this device. I was a bit worried how it would perform under high loads because of the USB 2.0 bandwidth limitations. However, it exceded them all! I was able to load up the screen with many application that were media intensive as well as run full screen videos on it with no noticeable lag or ill effects. I doubt you could game on it but I was very impressed. The only downside is it uses your CPU power to process the video. On my 3.8ghz e8400 dual core it taxed the cpu at most 10% when running a full screen video. Typically though it was running at about 2-4%.

I would highly recommend this device to anyone that is looking for an easy upgrade to add more monitors to their systems.
