The hard drive is one component of a computer that is bound to run into problems eventually.  Often times this is within a short time of owning the computer.  They can begin to fail in several ways. If it is developing bad sectors, which could be giving you errors or causing the system to run slow, it can often times be fixed.

In Windows Vista and XP you can run a utility called chkdsk that is built into the Windows operating system. To run it you have to first open My Computer and make sure your drive is listed there. Once you find it, right click on your hard drive, and at the bottom of the list choose Properties.

Then at the tabs at the top the window choose Tools. Then click Check Now...

A new window will pop open. Be sure to check both boxes. The second one is particularly the most important one because this will search the hard drive for errors in the sectors. Press Start to begin the process.

If this hard drive is in use by the system it will tell you that you need to reboot to run the process.  Select the option to reboot and then do so. Upon the next boot, it will check the hard drive for errors and attempt to fix any if it finds them.

If your hard drive is not fixed after running this, then it is likely that it will need to be replaced.
